July 20th

That's it. The final bits go on. With the ridge tiles on, it's now officially all watertight.
You can just make out where we live now - far top right hand corner.

July 19th

Ha! Just about finished the roof in all that rain... and now the forecast looks to turn warm and sunny.
C'est la vie.

It's taken a few days to get the lead done. Bought welded front aprons to make a good job of things around the chimney and then used standard 240mm code 4 lead to create the flashings.

Needed a new flashing between the old part of the house and the 1930's extension - used plastic 'Easy Soakers' for under the tiles and then Code 4 lead for the flashing on top. Didn't forget the patination oil either - this stops the lead staining the tiles white and leads to a nice dark grey patina of the lead.
The vent is the inlet for the MHRV system. It has a rating of 18000 sq.mm so just the job for a 150mm vent pipe. Took ages to source but well worth the hassle.

More tiling around roof windows and vents for WC and MHRV (mechanical heat recovery ventilation).

Doorway gets knocked through from hallway to main bedroo.

This floor is next to be replaced in what will become the bathroom and hallway - roof windows will light far end of new lounge below

Current outside progress on house - Dil had finished gabion walls now.

The Catslide roof at the rear of the house now gets the tiling treatment. This roof is twice the size as the front.

This is the tile detail. 3 layes of fibre cement slate, each one held in place with two copper nails and a copper rivet.

Tiling round the roof windows takes an age - each one is cut specially and has to fitted with soakers. Some tiles need to be cut from double tiles in order to avoid thin strips of tiles next to the window.

Dil completes the gabion wall on one side of the garden.

You can't keep a good woman down.
Did a good job didn't she.

Finally had a few dry hours to put some tiles up.
100 down. Another 1000 to go.

It's very fiddly around the chimney - lead soakers go under each tile, and it's awkward to lay tiles from above.

Building Update

Had some 'mates rates' help recently. Some old friends from Chippenham, Mike from Chepstow and Joc's sister Dil doing battle with stones for the gabion baskets.

Joc's brother-in-law John helped me out with all the counter battens, roofing felt, fascias, eaves protectors, roofing battens and the 3 velux roof windows. Thankfully, it's all waterproof now that the summer weather is here.
